On Commission
A historic 6os-era high-mod-
ernist office tower in down-
town Pittsburgh is the site of
a dramatic new lighting instal-
lation—
Rivers o f Glass,
an un-
dulating cascade of some 1,300
handblown blue globes sus-
pended in the lobby of 11 Stan-
wix Street. The city’s three
rivers inspired artists Jill
Reynolds and Daniel Spitzer,
who modeled the work on
high-speed images of water
droplets to represent a sound
wave from the composition
“Diminuendo and Crescendo
in Blue” by local jazz legend
Billy Strayhorn. The Pitts-
burgh Glass Center partnered
with the building owner and
e d g e
Studio architects to
sponsor the project.

weeks he spent eating in a hos-
pital cafeteria after his first
son was born. “ I was [then]
emotionally and physically
exhausted, and I tried to put
myself back in that head-space
as I was making this work.”
Made of natural materials for
a “reassuring, nurturing tone,”
the piece echoes the splendor
of a nearby 15-acre geothermal
lake.
